All of us at BHP have been increasingly concerned about the spread of the coronavirus globally.
Our thoughts continue to be with the people of China, and the many families impacted by the virus in the early months of this pandemic.
BHP donated 10 million Chinese Yuan to the Chinese Red Cross Foundation to support its novel coronavirus response efforts.
The donation is focused towards humanitarian support for doctors, nurses and medical personnel treating Coronavirus patients, as well as other response actions necessary to fight the effects of the virus.
In the meantime, we have also supported our Chinese customer BAOWU in their great efforts to provide nearly half of the medical oxygen needs in Wuhan based on their steel making facilities there.
With the mobilization of Chinese governments at all levels and the
support and cooperation of the international community, China is further ahead
on the curve to overcome this pandemic and is progressing well to reboot the
economy.
At BHP, our focus is on the safe continuity of our mining and oil and gas operations and on our logistics chains and this will ensure that China has the resources it needs to power a national and global economic recovery.
At the same time we are also focusing on support for the communities near our mines to fight this pandemic.
We are seeking to partner with manufacturers in China in providing important health resources to support our operations and local communities in Australia, Chile and other locations.
So it is clear that our partnership with China has many dimensions that support both economic growth and public health.
Although the challenge of this pandemic is unprecedented and is leading to
temporary economic impacts in areas such as free trade and people movement,
we believe the global fundamentals remain solid and we have full
confidence that the world is well positioned to achieve long-term growth as it
emerges from the pandemic fight. We can best achieve this by all nations working
together.
We will continue to engage with stakeholders throughout the response and recovery process to offer support in all locations where we operate, and we will work closely with our Chinese customers and suppliers to maintain stable production and supply to the market for business continuity.
Given China’s significance and importance to our business, we look forward to continued participation in the China Development Forum.
The Forum remains a key group for us at BHP and promotes a dialogue with our key partners and stakeholders in China.
We look forward to our ongoing engagement with the Forum for many years to come.
